Everyday Akron Stories, Non-Profit Feature

Project Learn of Summit County | Non-Profit Feature

How and when did the non-profit get started?

Project Learn of Summit County was founded in 1981 in response to a growing need for adult literacy and education services in Akron. Community leaders recognized that many adults lacked access to reading instruction, English language education, and pathways to earning a high school credential. What began as a small literacy initiative has grown into a countywide organization supporting adult learners across Summit County.

What are the mission and vision of the non-profit?

Project Learnโ€™s mission is to empower people and advance communities through education. Our vision is a community where adults have access to learning opportunities that build confidence, self-sufficiency, and meaningful participation in work, family, and civic life.

What is your focus in now? Who do you help and why?

Project Learn serves adult learners who are working to earn a GEDยฎ, improve English proficiency, or gain workforce skills. Many of our learners are balancing jobs, families, and major life transitions while pursuing education. We provide accessible, supportive programs because education is often the key to stability, opportunity, and long-term success.

For 45 years, Project Learn has supported adults in Akron and Summit County who are rebuilding their lives through education. Our learners are parents, workers, immigrants, and neighbors whose determination and resilience inspire everything we do. Behind every credential earned is a story of perseverance, community support, and renewed possibilityโ€”and we are proud to continue that work for generations to come.

Where is the non-profit headed? What do you hope to accomplish in the future?

As Project Learn celebrates 45 years of service, we are focused on expanding access, strengthening workforce pathways, and deepening community partnerships. Guided by our anniversary theme, โ€œLearning Today. Leading Tomorrow.โ€, we aim to help more adults earn credentials, advance careers, and build stronger futures for themselves and their families.

How can people get involved?

Community members can get involved by volunteering as tutors or classroom assistants, supporting programs through donations, or partnering with Project Learn to expand access to adult education in Summit County. Every form of support helps learners take meaningful steps forward.
