Warm days are ahead for the next few months and gardens are growing, which means it’s officially farmers market season! We’re lucky to have a handful of farmers markets in the Akron area.

We’ve created this guide with an interactive map to help you easily find a farmers market close to you, along with some helpful tips for attending a farmers market.

Farmers markets are a great way to not only support local farmers and makers, but also eat locally made and grown products. You’ll find an array of offerings at farmers markets, including fresh produce, homemade bread, locally raised meat, and handpicked flowers.

Here are some things to keep in mind before you go.

Check websites and social media

Before you go, check the farmers market’s website or social media (linked below) so that you can see which vendors will be there and also when the farmers market is held (some don’t start until June or July).

If there’s a certain vendor that you want to purchase something from, check their social media accounts to double check that they’ll be at the market. Some vendors do not attend every week or may only offer certain products each week.

Bring cash

While many vendors are beginning to accept credit or debit cards, cash is king at farmers markets. Paying with cash is often quicker and does not include fees like card payments do. Additionally, some vendors are cash only, so don’t forget to stop at an ATM on your way to the farmers market.

Bring a reusable bag

Another thing you’ll want to bring with you to the farmers market is a reusable bag. Many vendors offer plastic bags or containers with a purchase, but bringing your own bag ensures you’ll have a way to carry all of your goodies, and you’ll be cutting down on plastic waste.

Return the packaging

You can often return certain types of packaging to vendors. Think rubber bands, glass jars, produce baskets and some other types of packaging that vendors use to sell their products. This helps vendors save on packaging costs and also keeps these materials from going into the trash.

Be sure to ask the vendor if they accept returned packaging. Some may even offer a discount if you return their packaging.

Arrive early

As they say, the early bird gets the worm! Getting to a farmers market when they open or shortly after ensures you’ll have the best availability, especially at the larger farmers markets where vendors often sell out.

Try out a few farmers markets

If there’s a particular farmers market you regularly attend, consider going to one or two farmers markets that are new-to-you. You may discover a vendor that becomes a new favorite, or you might find yourself in a different part of town that you can explore after going to the farmers market.

If you’re new to farmers markets, go to a few different ones to see which ones have vendors that you like and works best in your schedule.

Remember that you’re supporting local!

The vendors you see at farmers markets are northeast Ohioans living within our own communities. When you purchase from them, you’re supporting the local economy, and you know exactly where your hydroponic lettuce or chocolate chip cookie came from.
