Pet Resources Local to Akron

Tips, tricks and resources for new pet parents!

By Megan Delong, Everyday Akron team member

Pets are some of the most fulfilling parts of life. I grew up with dogs and I was so excited to get my own puppy once I became a homeowner. First, my spouse Sam and I found a cat that we named Scully about three years ago. She was the perfect addition to our family and has been a spoiled cat ever since. It made sense to think about adding a puppy into the mix once we had more time … so we got Roswell, our Corgi puppy just over a month ago!

The thing about growing up with dogs is that I know a bit more about their habits than I did about cats. Sam, however, didnโ€™t grow up with any animals, and this is his first puppy. We did a lot to prep the house, our cat, and our expectations before we brought home Roz. Thankfully, there are tons of resources around Akron to get us ready!

Here is a map of Akron-area resources for pet owners with my highlights below.

Mortyโ€™s Munchies

Morty’s Munchies has high-quality dog chews and toys, and they’re conveniently located on Front St. in Cuyahoga Falls! We got an indestructible duck, and Roz loves it!

Happy Tails Thrift Shop

Happy Tails Thrift Shop is best place to go for second-hand dog crates, leashes, bowls, and more. Of course, they are a full thrift store โ€” that benefits the Summit County Humane Society โ€” with things not related to animals, but we found a lot of collars, harnesses, and toys that were unused / unopened and at a great price.

Highland Veterinary Clinic

This is where we take our pets! The staff at Highland Veterinary Clinic remember our petsโ€™ names and give Roz a bit of cheese when she has to get her shots. Scully is not a fan of the vet, but she is treated with the utmost care when she goes there.

Our friends with their own pets

We would not be as confident with our pets now if we didnโ€™t ask for a ton of advice from our friends and family members. If none of your friends have pets, we also learned a lot from YouTube videos โ€” like this one for Corgi care and this dog training account โ€” and by following a few accounts on Instagram, like Training Cesar’s Way and the ones listed on Kinship.

Where do you take your animals around Akron? What resources are there for bunnies, birds, horses, chinchillas, and more?
