Nestled in the heart of Northeast Ohio, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) offers a unique way to experience the natural beauty and rich history of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Explorers have a variety of options to catch a ride on the heritage railroad. I recently had the chance to enjoy the National Park Scenic excursion, so let’s start there.
The National Park Scenic excursion is a two-hour round trip that allows riders to immerse themselves in the park’s diverse landscapes. Passengers can choose from various seating options, including coach, table top, and executive class, each offering a comfortable vantage point to enjoy the scenery.
Along the route, it’s common to spot local wildlife such as eagles, deer, and herons in their natural habitats. Plus, CVSR volunteers share the incredible history of the area along the way. Be sure to enjoy snacks, beverages, a gift shop and more in the cafe car.
For those seeking a more active adventure, the CVSR’s Explorer program is an excellent option. This program allows visitors to bike or hike the Towpath Trail or paddle the river in one direction and then board the train for a relaxing return trip. The train can be flagged down at boarding stations by waving both arms over your head, and a nominal one-way fee is collected upon boarding. (If you plan to do it often, inquire about an Explorer Pass!)
Throughout the year, CVSR hosts a variety of themed excursions catering to diverse interests. The North Pole Adventure™ – a fan favorite running from November 8 to December 21, 2024 – offers a magical holiday experience for families, complete with hot chocolate, cookies, and a visit from Santa Claus.
Additionally, the Entertainment Excursions series features events such as the Princess Pajama Party, Canvas & Wine, Trivia Train, Bingo Train, Murder Mystery, and Trainquility, providing unique and engaging experiences for passengers of all ages.
