How and when did the non-profit get started?ย
Akron Cooperative Farms (ACF) was founded in 2018 in the North Hill neighborhood of Akron, a community known for its rich cultural diversity.
We turned underutilized city ballfields into a bustling 4-acre community garden (743 Gaylan Dr., Akron, OH 44310) offering affordable, organic garden plots to familiesโmany of whom are immigrants and refugees from Nepal, Bhutan, and other countriesโseeking to grow their own food and reconnect with farming traditions.
Over time, ACF has grown into a hub for urban agriculture education, food access, and cross-cultural community building.

What are the mission and vision of the non-profit?
Our mission is to strengthen Akron communities through the practice of urban agriculture. We envision a vibrant, inclusive community where neighbors come together to grow food, share knowledge, and build a more sustainable and connected future.

What is your focus in now? ย
Our focus right now is expanding access to locally-grown and culturally meaningful food, sustainability education, and youth programmingโespecially for families in North Hill. We serve more than 130 Gardeners from six countries, 95% of whom are immigrants or refugees.
Our gardeners grow food for home or market while building connection, income and cultural pride. We also partner with schools, universities and local organizations to host field trips, internships and volunteer service.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future?ย
We aim to keep growingโboth literally and figuratively. Future goals include adding youth education programs, developing our site as a teaching and entrepreneurial hub, and increasing our food production to share with local markets and neighbors in need. We’re also working toward longer-term sustainability through partnerships and community-driven fundraising.
We believe community grows here. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious about what urban agriculture looks like in Akron, we invite you to come see our space, meet our Gardeners, and experience the joy and power of growing food together.

How can people get involved?
